Ceiling Fan Light Chain Broken

If your ceiling fan light isn t working try replacing the pull chain first.

Hold a noncontact voltage tester. The switch will also need to be replaced if the chain will not pull down or if it broke off inside the fan housing. Remove the light bulb from the ceiling fan light socket. These pull chains get pulled on daily and can be broken.

Ceiling fans with lights have a pull chain to turn the fan or the lights on or off. If your ceiling fan pull chain is broken because it was pulled out of the switch there s an easy way to fix it. A few models do allow you to reattach the chain but you must access the switch before. With a voltage tester touch one end of the probe to the black wire and the other to the white wire.

Open up the switch in the ceiling fan and remove the broken piece of chain before replacing it with a longer one. If you pull too hard on the pull chain the chain can break or come out of its socket. Disassemble the switch and reconnect the chain. Gently pull the fixture down without touching the wires.

If the chain on your ceiling fan has ever pulled out then this is how to repair it. A broken pull chain on a ceiling fan almost always requires replacement of the on off switch as a repair. Disassemble the switch and reconnect the chain. Again take a picture of the wiring then undo the two wire nuts that wire it to the rest of the light kit.

First remove the light bulb if you re working on a ceiling light fixture. It s hardwired to the light kit. Unscrew the metal collar through which the pull chain should extend. Also the light switch itself may wear out or fail.

Open up the switch in the ceiling fan and remove the broken piece of chain. Flip off the circuit breaker to the ceiling fan s electrical circuit. If your ceiling fan or the light on the fan doesn t work when the chain is pulled then the problem is most likely a broken fan pull chain switch. When ceiling fan pull chain is broken inside of the ceiling fan when no pull chain is visible this likely means that the pull within the ceiling fan has broken near or inside the ceiling fan pull switch.

Then use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the fixture from its electrical box. Check the bulb for broken filaments.
