If a fireplace has a damper it s typically found within the throat of the chimney but can also be found located at the very top.

Our wood burning stoves were installed within existing chimneys and so the stove pipes extend from the stoves vertically into the flues located within the chimneys. Conversely outside air can enter through the flue into the firebox. The chimney houses the flue which is just the airway in which the smoke rises from the fireplace and exits through the roof. Below is a diagram of a typical fireplace and chimney. If you look up past the damper you will see a round metal chimney. And above the roof is more round metal chimney sometimes surrounded by a simulated brick housing. Damper the mechanism used to open and close the flue allowing smoke to exit the chimney.

The flue can either extend up vertically through the ceiling go out at an angle through an external wall or extend up to the roof through the inside of a chimney. A prefab fireplace generally has a firebox of cast refractory panels and usually some metal is visible in the room all around the firebox.
